Town Crier proclamations at Pontefract and District Golf Club

Posted on: 14th August 2026

Yorkshire day celebrations continued on Sunday the 2nd of August.

I had been booked  for a visit to Pontefract and District Golf Club. Tom Stanley, the House Director of the golf club gave me a warm welcome. Praise was in order for Tom as he had also given me examples of themes that I could use for the day’s proclamations. Themes included Yorkshire Pride, Light-hearted golf humour, and Competition atmosphere.

Introductions were made to members as we walked through the clubhouse, and Tom explained the how the day would pan out: Mixed 4-person teams. Yorkshire themes on every tee. Prizes included golf weekend vouchers, also a fun prize for nearest the pin. Bacon sandwiches provided with of course Yorkshire Tea, or coffee. Goody bags for everyone too.

One of the highlights of the visit for me was being driven around the course in a golf buggy. We stopped at various times to  have introductions and then a photo with yours truly. I was told I was a celebrity! Another golfer said that he had heard my proclamations on a Wednesday morning in town.

Proclamations were made throughout my visit, and I made sure to have a bacon butty for sustenance. My final proclamation of the visit was to thank everyone at the golf club especially Tom Stanley who facilitated a very positive experience for myself but also a great day for the golf club.

Copies of my Yorkshire Day proclamation as well as the mini – proclamations at the golf club will be filed in the reference room at Pontefract museum as well as on the Pontefract Civic Society website.

Tom Stanley of Pontefract Golf Club wrote:

“I just wanted to thank you for today. It was great having you at Pontefract golf club and you really added something to the day.
The feedback from both our members and visiting golfers has been excellent. Everyone enjoyed the atmosphere and your announcements went down really well. You played a big part in making the day a success.
I appreciate you giving up your time and helping us make the day one to remember.”
