Wakefield District Housing hosted their annual Love Where You Live Awards Dinner Pontefract Racecourse, and we were up for one award, and associated with another as part of the wider community that is the Pontefract Decoration Squad.

Digital in the Community category – Runner Up

Pontefract Civic Society plays an integral part of the Pontefract community and holds a wealth of activities and events for all. They have been increasing the digital promotion of their activities over the last few years but have found that as a result of cancelling physical events due to the pandemic, has given them a platform to develop the virtual event, which was an amazing success. Pontefract Civic Society has held a virtual VE Day event, Pontefract Allsorts event and a Yorkshire Day event, with more events in the pipeline. These digital events have been used to engage a massive audience and foster community spirit. The events were well organised and included hourly sessions and live feeds throughout the day, allowing volunteers to learn new skills like video editing and presenting to help make them a success. They were positively received which was reflected in the feedback and number of shares and likes the events received on social media. The group want to look to work with young people to continue to raise awareness about the work they do and engage with a younger audience using their digital platforms in the future.

Arts and Culture category – Winner

The Pontefract Decoration Squad started as a group to decorate Pontefract for the Tour de Yorkshire. Since then, they have created designs from painting and recycling waste drink bottles to create stunning displays using wire and netting around Pontefract for Remembrance Sunday, Yorkshire Day, VE Day and the Liquorice Festivals. They have also created hand painted banners and flags celebrating Pontefract’s rich history, which took the volunteers hours to make. Working together on the different designs creates a sense of community and all the volunteers get together regularly to discuss ideas and work on each project. They have built up relationships with local businesses to help create and hang their works of art for all to admire around the town centre.
