We were educated and entertained through this in person illustrated talk by Carole Smithies MBE, former Barnbow worker, academic and local historian. The Barnbow Lassies tells the story of the huge North East Leeds WWI shell filling factory and its largely female workforce; on 5th Dec 1916, the factory suffered the worst tragedy in the history of the city, when a massive explosion killed 35 of the women who worked there. The talk continues with the follow-on WWII gun factory and the post-war tank facility.
