The Royal British Legion, Ackworth and Pontefract Branch

The Royal British Legion is the Number One Charity for the service and ex-service Community. Each year the Royal British Legion spends over £70 million pounds on welfare and about £40 million is raised from the annual poppy appeal. Our own Poppy Appeal in Pontefract and Ackworth raises a substantial amount annually for the welfare fund. The Legion is a membership organisation and our branch, The Ackworth and Pontefract Branch, meets on the first Sunday of every month at The Ackworth Village Club, 52 Wakefield Road, Ackworth. Meetings start at 1045 am.In order to join it is not necessary to have served in the armed forces. New members are very welcome from any walk of life so long as they support the aims of the Legion. In addition to the care and welfare of our service community, the legion is the custodian of remembrance and to that end remembrance parades and service are organised by The Royal British Legion nationally and locally. The annual Remembrance Parade in Pontefract is our main event, with other commemorations marking specific occasions taking place as and when appropriate.
