Castleford & Pontefract District Lions Club

One of 51 Lions Clubs in Yorkshire, 900 in the UK with 17,000 members. and 46,000 worldwide with 1.4 million members. Castleford & Pontefract District Lions Club came into being 50 years ago and we still have one of our original members who is very active in the Club.We work under five strands Diabetes - we are having an Awareness Day on 10th November in St Giles Church; Vision - amongst other things we collect old spectacles and ship them out top the third world; Paediatric Cancer - we support various actions including Candlelighters; Environment - we planted 100 trees to celebrate or Centenary. Hunger Relief- we support the Pontefract Street Kitchen In addition we have our Message in a Bottle scheme, Motorised Scooter Loan Scheme, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. We support Wakefield Youth with our Skills for Life. In addition we try to assist where and when we can with local families and groups.Lions Clubs is a very social organisation, where one can meet people from all walks of life and interests. We have regular dinners, outings and Conventions. And for the more adventures International Conventions - this year Las Vegas, next year Italy, follwoed by India.Over the years we have assisted with many international disasters, providing assistance as swiftly as possible. #LCIF The Lions International Foundation has awarded $100,000 dollar grant to the recent Indonesian Lions to assist with relief efforts. We are still helping in Sri Lanka following their disaster some years ago. We have built orphanages and are still sponsoring their education system with books.

Volunteer Opportunities: There is no restriction on what members can get involved with. Different people have different talents and abilities. From those who are good at administration and are happy to be Secretary or Treasurer in this Social Media age we need to take advantage of various media opportunities including updating our own website. There are those who are good at organizing - be it stalls etc at Galas for our fundraising . We sell tickets at Christmas for our famous Booze Basket raffles. There are those whose leaning is more towards welfare work and the opportunities exist there. We are open to new and fresh ideas.As an organisation we pride our selves in our Leadership Training ... so we are not just taking but giving back to our people transferable skills.
