DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered what happens in a Masonic Lodge? You are cordially invited to discover the history of the Pontefract Lodge through a guided tour and learn about the symbolism and traditions of ancient Freemasonry. \nThe first Masonic Hall in Pontefract was above Arundel’s Offices in Ropergate in 1862. In 1892\, land at the end of Ropergate was purchased for £375 to purpose build a new hall\, which was completed in 1894. The current building\, situated at the corner of Ackworth Road and Carleton Road was built around 1890 and serves as a meeting place for 7 Masonic Lodges. Discover the many uses of the dungeon. See where English Civil War prisoners left to languish scratched their names into the rock.\nWe love our dungeon tours and know you will too! \nTour Times \n\nSaturday 12 September:    1045\, 1130\, 1330\, 1415 & 1500\n\nPre booking is required via the booking link. \nPlease read this information to make sure they are suitable for you and your group.\nFree tickets can also be booked on the morning of the tour from the castle gift shop\, subject to availability. Online tickets will not be available on the day of the tour. \nUnder 5s\nThis tour is not suitable for young children and babies (under 5s).\nChildren and babies cannot be carried up or down the steps due to the risk of falling. \nMeeting point\nMeet at the Gift Shop inside the Visitor Centre 5 minutes before your tour starts. \nFootwear\nThis tour involves going underground using steep steps. The dungeon floor is uneven. Sensible footwear is strongly recommended. \nDogs\nDogs are not allowed on the tour. \nAccessibility details\nUnfortunately this tour is not accessible for blind / visually impaired visitors or wheelchair users. This is due to the low light levels\, uneven ground and 44 steep historic steps down into the dungeon. Dogs and assistance animals cannot be allowed into the dungeon because of the steep steps. The conditions in the dungeon are often damp and dark. This may make the tour uncomfortable for visitors with sensory hypersensitivities. SUMMARY:Tour- Archbishop Holgate Hospital - legacy almshouses
DESCRIPTION:Tour of Holgate Hospital and Almshouses includes an opening talk in Ebor Hall about the history of Robert Holgate and his legacy.\n\nBorn in Hemsworth in 1481\, Robert Holgate who was Archbishop of York 1545 to 1553\, decreed in his will of 1555 that 24 almshouses within a 13 acre site\, should be built to provide for persons aged 60 years\, or over\, from the ancient parishes of Hemsworth\, Felkirk\, South Kirkby\, and Wragby. \nThe hosts will show a jacket that the Brothers and Sisters wore until the 1970’s.\nAfter the introductory talk\, visitors will take a tour of the Chapel\, Museum\, Boardroom and exterior of the Main House. \nRefreshments available by donation to the monthly charity. History books charged at a set price \n\nTour Times \nSaturday 12 September: 10:00; 13:00; 15:30\n\nPre booking required via booking link \nAdditional information\n\nMax number of people: 10\nEstimated duration: 1 hour 30 minutes\n\nAccessibility details\nAccessibility – The majority of the site is flat\, with some gentle slopes in places. Access to the chapel is via a disabled ramp\, the museum has a small wooden threshold to step over\, but once inside the floor is level. Information boards will be moved out of the museum and into the covered passageway\, so people have more space inside the museum. The boardroom\, however\, is the least accessible. There are 25 stairs to get to the boardroom\, without any other form of access\, this will be at your own risk. \n

DESCRIPTION:Church Open Day to see our wonderful and Ancient Parish Church \nAll Day Tours of our Double Helix Tower Staircase – Just turn up and join the next tour. This staircase has two sets of steps that spiral upwards in the same space and there is only one other in the U.K. and one or two in Europe. You will climb the narrow stairs from inside the Church and see the Ringing Chamber\, then return down the other set of steps\, emerging outside the current building.\nDisplay of Hand Painted Silk Vestments. These were made some years ago for All Saints Church and you will be able to see both the Vestments and some of the drawings and drafts of the Designs.\nSee the Communion Table and Pavement Candles\, etc. which were also designed specifically for the Church and reflect the architecture of the church and the Spiral Staircase.\nHear our Bells being rung and see how the Bells are rung.\nLight Refreshments all day. \nThis free event is part of Heritage Open Day \nAccessibility details\nAccess to the church is via a ramp so wheelchair and smaller ‘Buggies’ can enter\, but the Tower and Staircase are not accessible. For the Tower Tour you need to be wearing sensible shoes / boots and be reasonably fit as the space is small with a low roof in places and the steps are worn and uneven. If we can we will have a looped video of the Tour for those who don’t wish to go up the tower.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to launch a new digital interpretation of Pontefract’s hermitage and dispensary\, including virtual reality and film. Explore a unique heritage site hidden beneath the streets of Pontefract through digital technology and story telling. \nJoin us to explore the amazing story of Pontefract’s medieval hermitage and Victorian dispensary through an exciting new digital interpretation. Created by One To One Development Trust\, with support from PDHAG\, Pontefract Civic Society\, Pontefract Archaeological Society and Wakefield Museums and Castles. \nThe new digital platform includes a virtual tour of the hermitage\, which is hidden underneath Southgate in Pontefract town centre\, and video clips of memories of the hermitage and former dispensary building above. The hermitage was hand carved into the rock beneath Pontefract in the 1300s. In the 1800s\, a new hospital building was created for the town and built on top of the entrance to the hermitage. \nThe digital hidden heritage project is part of Wakefield Council’s Our Heritage Our Stories project\, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. \nThe free event is part of Heritage Open Day \nAccessibility details\nThe event is on the first floor of the library\, in the community space. SUMMARY:Talk : Women at War - the munition workers in WWI
DESCRIPTION:Local historian Eric Jackson relates the story of the National Shell Filling Factory Number 1\, better known as Barnbow\, especially the women that worked there and the explosion of 1916. \nThe illustrated talk describes the establishment of National Explosives and Filling Factories following the ‘Shell Crisis’ of 1916 and tells what led to the building of the Barnbow Munitions works\, what it did\, the women who worked there and how the artillery shells were manufactured and filled with explosives.\nThe central part of the talk is about the explosion of December 5th 1916 and its aftermath with the stories of some of those killed. The explosion killed over 30 girls\, including 2 from Pontefract and 6 from Castleford.\nThe memorials to those killed are described\, as well as similar disasters at other explosives factories\, and the effect women’s war work had on the eventual implementation of equal suffrage.\nThe end of production in 1918\, the factory’s closure in 1918\, its eventual demolition and sale\, and the site as it is today is also described along with a comparison with the similar World War Two works at Boston Spa. \nThis free event is part of Heritage Open Day \nPre booking preferred via link or turn up on the door.

DESCRIPTION:The theme of the walk is to describe how Darrington has changed over the last 70 years\, especially with regard to farming. \nYou will hear\, from farmer Alastair Wilson and Richard Hirst\, how farm work has changed\, from being very labour intensive with many small farms in the village and relatively small surrounding fields\, to the landscape and village layout we see today. Currently the village has larger farms\, needing less staff as mechanisation\, efficiency and size of farm equipment has changed. \nThis free event is part of the Heritage Open Day \nPre booking required via the link \nAccessibility details\nMeet in the ‘Spread’ public house\, outside area\, which is on the main road through the village. The walk is approximately 2 1/2 with many stops along the way. SUMMARY:The Hidden Lives of Elizabeth & Joe Love: A special exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This new exhibition will be available for the first time on Wednesday 16th September in as part of a tour with commentary. This will focus on our benefactors and what they were like. \nOur benefactors were remarkable. Both were hard-working ordinary people. She was a nurse and he a miner however what made them different was their interest and knowledge about history and heritage and their passion for collecting a wide range of historical items. They didn’t go on holidays\, they didn’t own a car but they collected historical objects. Their home\, the former gatehouse to Pontefract Castle\, has a unique story of its own and they filled it with fascinating and significant objects including local Castleford Pottery\, wonderful Jacobean furniture and a magnificent extensive collection of clocks some made by a famous Pontefract clock maker. \nWhat was even more unusual was that they left this unique building and collection in trust to create a museum for the the people of Pontefract and surrounding areas. Since opening in August 2025 many visitors have had the pleasure of seeing and learning about the contents but little has been shared about them. Trustees and volunteers are continuing to extend their knowledge about this family who were such generous benefactors to the people of Pontefract. We feel sure others will be interested to hear more. \nThe planned exhibition is the first step we hope to sharing what we have learnt about Joe and Elizabeth themselves and their working lives. DESCRIPTION:A Grade II listed 18th century town hall built in 1785 by Bernard Hartley with the added Victorian Assembly Rooms from 1882. Join Pontefract Civic Society for a guided tour of the Town Hall including the Assembly Rooms\, Nelson Room\, and perhaps a few more nooks & crannies. \nThe Borough Magistrates operated from the Old Town Hall until the early 1900s. It was here that the count was undertaken for the country’s first parliamentary election by secret ballot. The Nelson Room also houses the last remaining plaster cast of Nelson’s death scene from Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. \nMeet in Bridge Street 5 minutes before start time. DESCRIPTION:Come along and see the Rosse Observatory in Carleton\, Pontefract which was opened on 25th September 1983 and this is will be your chance to see the facilities. The evening will commence with a short talk about the Rosse Telescope. It was built in Ireland in 1845 and at 6 feet it was the largest telescope in the world\, at the time. \nYou will then be able to look round the observatory and go up into the Dome to see the large telescope. In 1892\, land at the end of Ropergate was purchased for £375 to purpose build a new hall\, which was completed in 1894. The current building\, situated at the corner of Ackworth Road and Carleton Road was built around 1890 and serves as a meeting place for 7 Masonic Lodges. SUMMARY:Friarwood Valley Gardens Pinhole Camera
DESCRIPTION:The giant pin-hole camera will be operational in the former summer house/aviary\, giving the chance to see live images of the gardens\, projected through the pin-hole. A brief outline will be given of liquorice growing in the Valley Gardens. \nVisit the Valley Gardens with planted Rose Gardens\, children’s playground and unique tree carvings. The Friarwood Valley Gardens is a public park and is a Grade II listed Historic Park: on the site of a medieval Dominican Friary and liquorice cultivation\, it became a public park in 1950. \nThe former aviary building in Valley Gardens has been around since at least 1840 and was built in the Georgian period. Former uses of the aviary include it reputedly being used as a male card school retreat and as a packing shed for the on site market gardens. \nA brief history will be given of liquorice growing and the summerhouse in the Valley Gardens by Dr Colin White; then Bob Clayden\, Pinhole Wizard\, will give a hands-on demonstration of the pinhole camera in this remarkable building. \nThis free event is part of the Heritage Open Day

SUMMARY:Two ground-breaking Quaker projects in Pontefract\, West Yorkshire
DESCRIPTION:The event will take place on Harropwell Lane\, Pontefract\, and will look at a project which aimed to help boys who were reluctant to go to school\, and another project working with people on probation. \nThe project which was about helping reluctant school attenders involved building a centre\, and then organising activities within it. Over the years the project changed\, but the building is still there and is known as Pontefract Family Centre. \nThe project which involved working with people on probation\, developed a scheme whereby a couple of houses were available. People who had been released from prison\, would live in these houses for a specific amount of time\, learning to look after themselves again\, and they could also go to the probation centre for support\, for social contact\, and to meet their probation officers. \nPontefract Quaker Meeting was heavily involved in both projects. After hearing about the projects\, we will walk back to the Meeting House\, and have refreshments. \nThis free event is part of Heritage Open Day \nBooking information\n\nPre-booking requirement: Pre-booking preferred\nBooking conditions: If you haven’t been able to pre-book\, just turn up on the day. Pontefract Meeting House is fully accessible by wheelchair. There are toilets in the Meeting House\, one of which is accessible. There are no toilet facilities available in Harropwell Lane.
