DESCRIPTION:With a partial solar eclipse set to take place in August 2026\, this engaging session at Rosse Observatory offers the perfect opportunity to learn more about one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena. \nVisitors can explore how solar eclipses occur\, what makes this upcoming event special\, and why they don’t happen every month despite the Moon orbiting the Earth. The session will also introduce the science behind the Sun itself – from its structure and energy to its importance for life on Earth. \nA key focus of the event is safe solar observation. DESCRIPTION:Develop drawing and painting skills while exploring the incredible Elizabeth Love Museum in Pontefract. \nThis series of art workshops\, led by an experienced artist and teacher\, offers the chance to learn more about the building’s history and its fascinating collection of artefacts. Each session focuses on a different group of objects collected by Elizabeth Love and her brother Joe\, providing inspiration for creative work. \nSuitable for adults aged 18+\, with no prior art experience required\, the small class size (maximum of 8 participants) allows for plenty of individual attention. \nTea and coffee will be available\, but please bring a packed lunch. \nPlease note: the workshop takes place on the lower floor\, accessed via a spiral staircase\, and the tour includes upper floors reached by stairs. Make sure to stop by the make-and-take workshop where participants can create handheld parade flags inspired by Pontefract’s liquorice heritage and traditional sweet forms! SUMMARY:Wakefield Armed Forces Day
DESCRIPTION:Wakefield Armed Forces Day is a free\, family-friendly event at Pontefract Park honouring serving and veteran members of the Armed Forces alongside the broader services of military personnel. \nVisitors can walk through the military village\, discovering more about the capabilities and traditions of the armed forces by speaking to serving military and cadets. The 5 Towns Veterans Support Hub will also be a hosting a VIP area for veterans. \nThe main arena will be compered by Rhubarb Radio\, with a fantastic schedule of activities including the veteran’s parade\, tug of war\, drill competitions and much more! There will also be a fantastic parachute display from the Wings Free Fall Parachute Team\, plus a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. \nShop at the market\, with traders selling an assortments of delicious food\, drinks\, homemade crafts and gifts. Looking for lunch? With plenty of street food vendors you’ll be spoilt for choice! You can also take a break at the onsite bar which will be serving a range of refreshments. Children will love the funfair rides which are back again this year – please note they are cash only. \nPlease note the use of drones and kites is strictly permitted at this event due to aerial activity.  \n  \nBattle of Britain Memorial Flight\nWe’re delighted to announce there will be Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at this year’s Wakefield Armed Forces Day! \nMore information coming soon so stay tuned for exact timings and aircraft expected! \nWakefield Armed Forces Day is organised by Wakefield Council and is part of the UK-wide Armed Forces Day celebrations. \nWakefield Council are thrilled to be one of the 130 local events supported by a Ministry of Defence grant. \nIf you have any questions about this event please contact afd@wakefield.gov.uk

DESCRIPTION:Our speaker for the evening Eric Jackson details the transformation of England from a rural\, agricultural society to an urban\, industrial one with the concomitant population growth of towns and cities\, picking apart the advantages\, disadvantages and the history of the project\, including the infrastructure required for the logistics of such an undertaking and the individual Model Villages themselves and their famous sponsors.\nThe beginnings of the philanthropic movement\, The Society for Improving the Conditions of the Labouring Classes\, the Peabody Trust and others and the Great Exhibition of 1851 and Prince Albert’s Cottages are all discussed as are the later model villages\, Port Sunlight\, Bournville and New Earswick\, which led to the gestation of the ‘Garden City’ concept and ‘Homes fit for Heroes’.
