SUMMARY:Visit and Tour - St Giles\, Church of England
DESCRIPTION:Guides available \, giving tours and information about the church (1000-1300hrs). A visit to the bell ringing chamber (1000-1200hrs)\, the bell chamber is not accessible. The cafe will be open during the morning for refreshments. \nSt Giles incorporates the site of C12th chapel of St Mary de Foro -St Mary in the Market Place. The current St Giles Church has undergone many changes to the building\, its C14th arches with its quatrefoil pillars being the oldest remaining part of the church. \nSt Giles has many interesting areas\, spanning the centuries and guides will be available to show visitors around. (10:00-13:00). The guides will give information about the church and its journey through history\, this will include the ceiling bosses and the military remembrance corner which includes the flag of the Burma Star association. \nVisit the bell ringing chamber (10:00-12:00); which is rarely open to the public; to learn about the history of the tower and the ancient art of church bell ringing. You may also be able to chime a bell! (the bell chamber is not accessible). Note: all minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult. \nThe café\, within St Giles\, will be open during the morning. \nAccessibility details\nThe bell ringing chamber is only accessible via narrow\, spiral stone steps. DESCRIPTION:Tour of Holgate Hospital and Almshouses includes an opening talk in Ebor Hall about the history of Robert Holgate and his legacy.\n\nBorn in Hemsworth in 1481\, Robert Holgate who was Archbishop of York 1545 to 1553\, decreed in his will of 1555 that 24 almshouses within a 13 acre site\, should be built to provide for persons aged 60 years\, or over\, from the ancient parishes of Hemsworth\, Felkirk\, South Kirkby\, and Wragby. \nThe hosts will show a jacket that the Brothers and Sisters wore until the 1970’s.\nAfter the introductory talk\, visitors will take a tour of the Chapel\, Museum\, Boardroom and exterior of the Main House. \nRefreshments available by donation to the monthly charity. History books charged at a set price \n\nTour Times \nSaturday 12 September: 10:00; 13:00; 15:30\n\nPre booking required via booking link \nAdditional information\n\nMax number of people: 10\nEstimated duration: 1 hour 30 minutes\n\nAccessibility details\nAccessibility – The majority of the site is flat\, with some gentle slopes in places. Access to the chapel is via a disabled ramp\, the museum has a small wooden threshold to step over\, but once inside the floor is level. Information boards will be moved out of the museum and into the covered passageway\, so people have more space inside the museum. The boardroom\, however\, is the least accessible. There are 25 stairs to get to the boardroom\, without any other form of access\, this will be at your own risk. \n

See where English Civil War prisoners left to languish scratched their names into the rock.\nWe love our dungeon tours and know you will too! \nTour Times \n\nSaturday 12 September:    1045\, 1130\, 1330\, 1415 & 1500\n\nPre booking is required via the booking link. \nPlease read this information to make sure they are suitable for you and your group.\nFree tickets can also be booked on the morning of the tour from the castle gift shop\, subject to availability. Online tickets will not be available on the day of the tour. \nUnder 5s\nThis tour is not suitable for young children and babies (under 5s).\nChildren and babies cannot be carried up or down the steps due to the risk of falling. \nMeeting point\nMeet at the Gift Shop inside the Visitor Centre 5 minutes before your tour starts. \nFootwear\nThis tour involves going underground using steep steps. The dungeon floor is uneven. Sensible footwear is strongly recommended. \nDogs\nDogs are not allowed on the tour. \nAccessibility details\nUnfortunately this tour is not accessible for blind / visually impaired visitors or wheelchair users. This is due to the low light levels\, uneven ground and 44 steep historic steps down into the dungeon. Dogs and assistance animals cannot be allowed into the dungeon because of the steep steps. The conditions in the dungeon are often damp and dark. This may make the tour uncomfortable for visitors with sensory hypersensitivities. DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered what happens in a Masonic Lodge? You are cordially invited to discover the history of the Pontefract Lodge through a guided tour and learn about the symbolism and traditions of ancient Freemasonry. \nThe first Masonic Hall in Pontefract was above Arundel’s Offices in Ropergate in 1862. In 1892\, land at the end of Ropergate was purchased for £375 to purpose build a new hall\, which was completed in 1894. The current building\, situated at the corner of Ackworth Road and Carleton Road was built around 1890 and serves as a meeting place for 7 Masonic Lodges. The 5 Towns Veterans Support Hub will also be a hosting a VIP area for veterans. \nThe main arena will be compered by Rhubarb Radio\, with a fantastic schedule of activities including the veteran’s parade\, tug of war\, drill competitions and much more! There will also be a fantastic parachute display from the Wings Free Fall Parachute Team\, plus a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. \nShop at the market\, with traders selling an assortments of delicious food\, drinks\, homemade crafts and gifts. Looking for lunch? With plenty of street food vendors you’ll be spoilt for choice! You can also take a break at the onsite bar which will be serving a range of refreshments.
