On Fri 1 Sept, we launched this year’s guide to Heritage Open Days 4-day festival with host partners, civic society members and the Town Crier courtesy of Pontefract Heritage Group.

12 venues will be throwing their doors open wide in and around Pontefract, between 8thand 16thSeptember, starting with Nostel Priory on 8thSept. Our events in Pontefract, Carleton and East Hardwick will include heritage walks, the town hall, four churches, each with their own story to tell, Ackworth Quaker School, the liquorice fields, the castle, the Masonic Hall, Friarwood Valley Gardens, Pontefract as a garrison town, and an exhibition in Pontefract Library this week to get you started!

Also on Tuesday 11thSeptember, our monthly talk will be given by Kevin Trickett MBE, President of Wakefield Civic Society, and is entitled Transports of Delight, which refers to the Orient Express and stories about other train journeys (there is a small charge for this talk at Carleton Grange).

Paul Cartwright, civic society chair, said

“We are really pleased that we have the support of venue owners and their volunteers to make this a great series of events. We hope that visitors and local people will wish to explore, and if you pick up our booklet at the library, museum, castle and other locations, then you’ll be able to plan your visits to several of these great events”.
