Pontefract Civic Society has only recently had sight of the drawings and detail of the A628 Traffic Calming improvements.

Even though the closing date for comments has passed, may we say that we were pleased to see these plans for much needed safety improvements. However, we do think the position of the traffic islands should be altered. The two on the north slope of the hill should be spaced further apart to allow for some overtaking. There are often slow moving tractors and trailers and other farm vehicles causing hold-ups on the uphill lane.

The one near to the little bridge over the Went beck, where the road is at its narrowest, could be dangerous and is the final one nearest to Pontefract even needed; there is no overtaking on that final stretch towards Pontefract.

We also think there should be a reduced speed limit for the length of the proposed scheme to 50 mph.
